Think Twice!
An exciting and thought provoking new play on knife crime and bullying
Carl Speakman is a trouble maker, lawbreaker, disruptive, corruptive a thoroughly nasty piece of work. He’s a bully, a thug and his actions are about to cause a devastating effect for those who come into contact with him. Ben is a studious boy, he doesn’t have many friends and is always the victim but he’s a good lad. His parents say he was a happy normal boy. So it comes as a shock to them. They didn’t know.
This hard hitting piece shows the harmful effect bullying, labelling and the carrying of knives can have on society. How one minor action can spiral out of control resulting in two different families losing a child. One dead. One as good as dead.
Through out the production many of the characters have the opportunity to stop the terrible actions that will unfold but each character has a different reason for not. Everyone is involved from the perpetrator, parents, friends and staff who all regret that they didn’t Think Twice.
"Think Twice" is a hard-hitting and energetic new play for young people written by highly-acclaimed playwright and novelist, David Calcutt ("The Terrible Fate of Humpty Dumpty", "Crowboy"), which explores the forces and the fears that can lead to acts of violence and knife-crime. www.davidcalcutt.co.uk
This play is educational as well as entertaining. We want to encourage our audience to learn, change their thinking and even their behaviour. Theatre is a powerful and effective vehicle for inviting individuals to evaluate their own behaviour in order for them to create personal development and change.
Knife crime is both a national and local concern our aims through this production are to:-
raise people’s awareness of the devastation this type of crime can cause to families and society.
show that the problem is not contained with inner-city communities but is now spreading to rural areas.
present reasons why some people carry knives. Is it fear, peer pressure, self-protection or perhaps the need for “respect”?
investigate the short and long term repercussions of carrying knives, and the drastic effects that this can have.
Bullying and labelling people are two other prominent themes running through the production. We focus on how bullying is metered out. How the cause effects an individuals behaviour and in turn how it effects a wider circle of people. From labelling we see how assumptions are made and then become stereotypes. This soon becomes put-downs, name-calling and verbal abuse.
People are complex, multifaceted, and multidimensional. Think Twice shows these elements clearing to its audience. Knife crime, bullying and labelling is a vicious cycle that creates harm and anguish and we need to think about our behaviour and intentions before it is too late.
